The British Olympic Association (BOA) has announced that Aldershot Army base in Hampshire has been chosen as the location for Team GB's training camp in the run up to the 2012 Games. The site – which was up against competition from Bath and Loughborough Universities – was chosen because of its proximity to the Stratford-based Olympic Village and the availability of training venues and accommodation. The site's medical and transport facilities, its security and development potential were also praised.

Simon Clegg, chief executive of the BOA, who incidentally served at Aldershot as a major, said: "After very careful deliberation over the past year, our panel has concluded that Aldershot provides the very best package to meet the requirements of Team GB."

"In reaching this difficult decision, we have taken into account a wide range of factors that experience has shown are likely to impact on performance and final preparation for the Games."

The Aldershot base features a Centre of Sporting Excellence, with facilities including a 50m swimming pool, a 400m running track and two indoor sports arenas.
